New Changing Pavilion For Sowerby Sports Village

Construction work has started at Sowerby Sports Village near Thirsk, to add a new changing pavilion. The Business Desk reports that the two-changing room pavilion is part of a wider £1.3m upgrade of the sporting facility. The pavilion is due to be completed in early 2023.

The development off Gravel Hole Lane in Sowerby is set on a 11.1-hectare site, and it has been under the management of Hambleton District Council since 2016. The council have already invested £250,000 to install an all-weather pitch for use of Thirsk School and Sixth form College.

Some of the funding has been received from the Football Federation, as through developer contributions. The lighting has been upgraded to LED lights in order to reduce cost and carbon emissions.

Further grass pitches, a fitness trail, allotments, and a sustainable drainage system have already been installed at the site, which has already been landscaped to accommodate its purpose.

Leader of Hambleton District Council, Councillor Mark Robson said: “These are very exciting phases of the sports village development which will on completion give residents access to top class sports facilities on their doorstep.”

He added: “It’s great to think that our young people will have access to this excellent facility for many years to come, encouraging them to both enjoy and develop in sport. Who knows, we may even produce our very own Lioness or Olympian.”

“Overall, this project is an integral part of the Sowerby Gateway development providing retail, residential, education, hospitality and employment opportunities to the area. This is just another step towards the overall aim of improving facilities for this local community.”

Meanwhile, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, refurbishment work has begun on the Borough Market, which is part of the £11.7m Future High Streets work planned for the town. The Victorian market hall is regarded as a landmark feature of the town, and is Grade II* listed. The Business Desk reports that it is to undergo a £5m upgrade.

Repairs to the roof are already underway, to ensure that the building is well insulated and leak proof in time for the coming winter. The outside space and facilities surrounding the Market Hall will also be improved to enhance the visitor experience.

Councillor Silvia Dacre, Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for resources, said: “Conserving and breathing new life into historic buildings is an important part of the Halifax Future High Streets programme. The magnificent Borough Market is one of our key heritage buildings and we’re thrilled that major improvements are now underway.”

Cllr Sarah Courtney, member for towns, engagement and public health, added: “We’re hoping to encourage visitors and residents to move around the whole town, rather than visiting just one area, to make the most of Halifax’s fabulous existing retail and cultural assets, and also giving people the opportunity to be more active in their day-to-day lives.”

Nearby Elland is also to receive £6.3m of central government funding to improve and restore the town centre buildings and infrastructure.
