Plans For £12m Redevelopment Of Castleford Tigers Stadium Submitted

Plans for a major redevelopment of the Castleford Tigers’ Wheldon Road ground have been submitted to Wakefield Council, the BBC reports. £12m is earmarked for direct improvements to the current stadium, as part of a proposed £200m regeneration scheme for the wider local area.

Castleford Tigers are a professional rugby league club who compete in the top-level Super League. They have played at the Wheldon Road stadium since 1927, after taking it over from the town’s football club. The plans include the construction of a new all-seater main stand, a new banqueting suite, and extra hospitality areas.

The improvements would lift the stadium to meet current Super League standards. Disabled facilities and viewing areas would be upgraded, and a new floodlit 4G training pitch would be installed. The wider £200m proposals by Axiom Yorkshire include £15m of highway improvements to the Junction 32 roundabout.

Castleford’s marketing director, Mark Grattan, said: “We are delighted that the planning applications for both Axiom and the Wheldon Road improvements have now been submitted. This is a really important moment for the club and the town more widely.”

He added: “If both planning applications are approved, the money raised will secure the future of Castleford Tigers at Wheldon Road for a generation, at an important time for rugby league, with Super League considering a move to a grading system.”

“The quality of our home is critical to our future sporting success, and these plans provide an upgrade to player training and medical facilities.

“Improving the matchday experience for all fans is of course our priority, but the significantly improved banqueting and hospitality facilities enable us to increase matchday revenue and generate income throughout the week, which in turn benefits the club’s finances.”

Axiom claim that the long-awaited development would create 2,200 new jobs for the area and boost the local economy. Matt Newsum, a BBC sports correspondent, describes the current Wheldon Road stadium, known colloquially as ‘The Jungle’, as ‘an evocative time-warp of a ground.’

To meet current standards, it needs some major upgrading. However it is hoped that the grounds will retain the unique character and atmosphere that many of the club’s fans know and love. Most commentators agree that a redevelopment is a better solution than moving to a new stadium.

A spokesman for Axiom Yorkshire, owner of the Junction 32 site, said: “On top of the much-needed improvements for the Castleford Tigers stadium, if approved, the Axiom proposals will deliver around 2,200 jobs, generating wide-ranging socio-economic benefits for the local area.”

He added: “We had particularly useful feedback from residents living near the Axiom site and our design team has taken great care to work through these comments to ensure that the employment development is of the highest quality and offers the most benefits to the whole community.”

Axiom claim that the public response to their proposals has been positive and supportive.
