Milestone For York Hospital Expansion

Milestone For York Hospital Expansion

York Hospital has reached a milestone stage in its £18m upgrade works to the Emergency Department. The York Press reports that the roof has been completed, meaning that the building is watertight, and work can now start on the interior of the building.

The event was celebrated by staff from the NHS, the construction company, and the contractors. The two-storey extension will expand the urgent care facilities, with the addition of 12 new assessment and treatment cubicles for staff to assess emergency patients.

The ‘watertight’ event was attended by York and Scarborough Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust chief executive, Simon Morritt and staff from the Emergency Department. They viewed the progress so far, and were shown around the site by representatives from the construction company, Kier.

Mr Morritt said: “This is an exciting landmark in the project to expand and reconfigure our urgent and emergency care facilities at York Hospital. This multi-million pound investment to develop a brand new two-storey extension and eight bedded resuscitation area to the Emergency Department will increase capacity and improve care for patients.”

He added: “It is a crucial step closer to providing this much-needed improvement. We are really starting to see it taking shape and it was fantastic to walk around and begin to visualise the huge difference this will make for staff and patients.”

In addition to the new cubicles, the children’s and adults waiting area will be separated, and there will be a new resuscitation zone which will have a dedicated area for children. There will also be improved infection control measures, with designated glazed cubicles provided for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, and a new point of care testing laboratory.

Mike Harkness, care group director for the Emergency Department, described the development as a “fantastic opportunity”. He added: “This investment will provide the extra space and facilities we need and improve initial assessment and faster decision making for patients, as well as creating a much better working environment for our staff.”

The new facilities are expected to be fully operational by May 2023. In March of this year, York Hospital also welcomed the opening of a new £2.5 million Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which provides six new isolation beds for critical care patients. The extra beds were crucial to prevent critical care patients from being looked after in operating theatres.

The new emergency assessment area is expected to significantly reduce pressure on demand for places at York Hospital, which like all hospitals, is striving to return to full strength after the Covid crisis.

Dan Doherty, regional director for Kier Construction North and Scotland said: “We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone of the construction of the new Emergency Department at York Hospital.”

Kier have previously worked on several other healthcare facilities in the region, and have strong links with NHS trusts and the local supply chain to deliver community service projects.
