Milestone For New Sheffield City Centre Hotel

Milestone For New Sheffield City Centre Hotel

A new flagship hotel in Sheffield city centre has reached a key stage in its construction, after the steel frame core achieved its full eight storey height. Insider Media reports that the luxury Radisson Blu development will eventually have 154 bedrooms, a roof top terrace, and views over the Peace Gardens.

A topping out ceremony was held to celebrate the milestone, with architects HLM Architects and Turner & Townsend, and representatives from Sheffield City Council and the Radisson Hotel Group in attendance. The contractors are McLaughlin & Harvey, who aim to finish the build by early 2023.

Pat Cussen, regional director UK & Ireland at Radisson Hotel Group, said: “We’re thrilled to be at the forefront of the Heart of the City programme and to see the hotel taking shape. Having presence in such a great city and adding this new property to our portfolio of Radisson Blu hotels across the UK is a fantastic achievement.”

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, executive member for city futures: development, culture and regeneration at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are excited to see construction work on the Radisson Blu site progressing well.”

He added: “The view from the top floor over the Peace Gardens is spectacular and we can’t wait for the hotel’s guests and visitors to see it for themselves soon. Radisson Blu is a key part of the Heart of the City jigsaw and I’m positive it will be a huge success.”

The hotel is part of the wider Heart of the City regeneration scheme for Sheffield, which is set to see its population expand to 2 million people within the next five years. The city has a student population of 65,000, and 563,000 people currently live within the central district, making it the fourth largest city in the UK.

61% of Sheffield is made up of open green spaces, and it is just a 15-minute drive away from the uplands of the Peak District.  The £450m long term regeneration project encompasses 1.5 million sq ft. The focus is on reviving and upgrading existing buildings, rather than demolition and rebuild.

The planners Queensferry, in partnership with the city council, are keen to preserve the unique character and industrial heritage of this traditional steel making city. The Radisson Blue hotel will be carefully constructed to retain the existing Victorian façade along Pinstone Street, for example.

Paul Sargent, CEO & Founder of Queensferry, said: “We genuinely want to make the world a better place to live in. At Queensberry, we understand the positive impact of great design on community wellbeing. We strive to improve the quality of the towns and cities we live in by actively being involved in their physical and economic transformations.”

The high-end hotel will aim to attract new business to Sheffield, as well as enrich the social scene in the city centre, with a contemporary rooftop bar. The views will overlook the award-winning Peace Gardens, which boast artistic water features, the Spanish War Memorial, and the Bochum Bell.
