Aberdeen Council Reveals Plans To Redevelop School Estates

Children in Aberdeen are set to benefit from the construction of new educational facilities over the next few years, after the local authority revealed its plans to redevelop its school estates.

Aberdeen Council told the Evening Express that two new academies are going to be built in the county, while updates are taking place on other local schools.

“Construction is under way on the new £55 million community campus in Inverurie, one of the largest projects of its type in Scotland; while we have committed to building a similar state-of-the-art facility in Peterhead, worth £71 million,” a council spokesperson stated.

This comes after new multi-million pound schools have been built in the last 18 months, including Midmill, Hillside, Turriff and Uryside Primary Schools, while Kinellar Primary School is scheduled to open for the new academic year.

The local authority also intends on extending Stuartfield Primary School and Old Rayne Primary School, demonstrating its commitment to improving education hubs throughout the region.

In addition to this, existing schools have been updated through the implementation of learning plazas, which helps schools use space more effectively. These have been introduced at Peterhead and Mintlaw Academies already.

The spokesperson revealed intentions to also build them at Huntly’s Gordon Schools, in addition to Banchory and Mackie Academies.

As a result of all this construction redevelopment work, the proportion of schools that were in a good or satisfactory state in April 2017 was 86 per cent. This is an increase from 80.1 per cent six years earlier.

Many schools in England could also do with updating, with construction work having to take place during school holidays to avoid disrupting lessons and having hazards on campus.
