Plans Revealed For New Leeds-Bradford Terminal

Work could commence by the end of 2020 on a £150m sustainable new terminal for Leeds-Bradford Airport (LBA), it has been announced. The scheme, privately funded by LBA’s owners AMP Capital, is hoped to meet targets of seven million passengers annually by 2030.

The current terminal, which will be 20 years old this year, will be replaced by the new three level, 34,000 square metre building. It will contain improved shopping, bars, and restaurants, with access and comfort from boarding to arrivals, if plans are all approved.

According to The Telegraph & Argus, Hywel Rees, Chief Executive of LBA, said: “This proposed development is hugely exciting for Leeds-Bradford Airport and the North and replaces our previously approved plans.”

At the heart of the new plan is sustainability, with aims for LBA to reach the target of zero carbon emissions from airport operations by 2023. It has had an esteemed seal of approval from Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), the world’s leading sustainability method for projects, infrastructure and buildings, which classified the scheme as “excellent”.

Mr Rees said: “This proposal is not about growing beyond our predicted capacity; it is about meeting the same demand in a more efficient way, with a smaller environmental footprint”

The plans also addressed complaints from politicians that a planned rail station would be too far from the current terminal. The new site will be located closer to the new rail links.
