Is Leeds Set To Get New Hospitals?

Leeds could see two new hospitals being constructed in the coming years if plans submitted this month are given the go ahead.

Insider Media shared details of the proposed project to construct two new hospitals at Leeds General Infirmary.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust submitted an outline planning application to Leeds City Council this month, which if approved will allow it to build these new facilities. One will be for adult patients, while the other will be for children and young people.

According to the planning application, the new adults’ hospital will include operating theatres for day case procedures as well as critical care facilities. The other building will be a purpose-built hospital for children and young people, making it more suited to their needs than existing hospital buildings that are modified for these patients.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust explained that the new children’s hospital will feature family-friendly areas, as well as delivering a “completely different experience of hospital care”.

Linda Pollard, Trust Chair, told the news provider that it’s important for the Leeds General Infirmary to evolve.

“The potential of this development is enormous, not only for the future of health services for patients in Leeds and beyond, but also for the skills and investment it will bring to the city and the vital role it will play in establishing the Innovation District,” she stated.

The plans already have the support of council leader councillor Judith Blake, who said she was pleased to see the proposal progressing. She too believes it will be an important addition to the Innovation District, commenting that it would “fit perfectly” with these plans.

Councillor Blake said that, if approved, the plans would further enhance “the reputation of the city at the forefront of health innovation and research”.

Having the new hospitals in the Leeds Innovation District will allow the NHS Trust to form close links with companies carrying out health, medicine and technology research, and it is also hoped that this area of the city will attract new investment in these areas thereby creating more jobs.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that the development is expected to cost in the region of £450 million and noted that the new hospitals are part of the NHS Hospitals of the Future programme.

However, it is still in its very early stages of gaining approval from the council, and the Trust wants to hear from those living in Leeds about their thoughts on the proposals.

If the work does go ahead, there will certainly be a need for scaffolding companies in Leeds as the project progresses.

It seems that 2019 is getting off to a good start when it comes to construction projects in Leeds, with the city also recently seeing a planning application submitted for what will be the country’s largest modular council housing development.

28 new homes could be constructed in less than nine months if the scheme is given the go-ahead, which would mean it takes less than half the time to build these homes using modular construction methods than it would if the council used traditional construction methods.
