New Build To Rent Scheme Planned For Sheffield

A new complex of build-to-rent flats is set for Sheffield, with 268 apartments set to be constructed on a site off Nursery Street.

The new housing complex will replace an old industrial premises and car park, and is significant in that it’s being constructed on the other side of the river, an area that has yet to see much development in the same way as the rest of the city, the Star revealed.

In total, the regeneration scheme is expected to cost £30 million, with developer Brickland proposing three interconnected towers of flats, two that are 12 storeys high and one that is seven storeys high.

Director of Whittam Cox Architects Ian Lowson, the company behind the scheme’s design, explained that build-to-rent is a positive step for the city, pointing out that certain buildings that were constructed in the past with the aim to sell properties don’t have the highest level of quality.

“It’s not in the build-to-rent developer’s interests – it’s not a quick hit, it’s a long-term investment, so that’s why we’re getting top materials, really well-considered details,” he told the newspaper.

A decision on planning permission for the site is expected in the new year, with the developer hoping to complete construction on the apartments within 18 to 24 months of this being granted.

Schemes like this are likely to be increasingly important if the government is to meet its target of constructing 300,000 new properties a year. Although more homes are being built in England, the number is still falling short of this target.
