Industry Report: Latest News on the South Bank Development, Leeds.

It finally looks like the long awaited South Bank development in Leeds is set to go ahead. Vastint has outlined its planning application for the iconic Tetley site to the city council. Hailed as one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe the Yorkshire Herald has reported that the planned 180 hectare project “will be the same size as Edinburgh new town.”

The project is set to create 4000 homes as well as completely overhauling the infrastructure of the area making it more accessible and traversable for both pedestrians and cyclists. Vastint have outlined the details of how they would like to transform the five acre Tetley site. Plans include 850 new homes – 5% of which have been allocated as affordable housing.

The company are also recognising the creativity of the city by dedicating a portion of the 85,000 square meters of employment space to creative industries. Although some of the buildings on the Tetley site will have to be demolished Vasint are keeping the iconic Tetley warehouse at the centre of the development as an art gallery.

Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for transport and the economy has stated that “Leeds has a strong track record as one of the most successful cities for investment. The city centre’s South Bank presents one of the most exciting development opportunities in any UK city. It is key to delivering our commitment to be the best city in the UK by 2030.”

Having already attracted over £500 million of investment it is hoped that the redevelopment of South Bank will provide in excess of 10,000 jobs. With plans to house everything from creative space, leisure and retail facilities as weel as a new transport hub ready for HS2 and HS3 this development really will boost Leeds’ already outstanding reputation as a powerhouse in the North.
