Article 50 To Be Triggered On March 29th

The process of leaving the European Union is set to begin on March 29th, with Theresa May announcing that Article 50 will be triggered on that day and that a letter has been sent to the office of EU Council president Donald Tusk to formally notify it of this fact.

According to the Daily Telegraph, next week Ms May will write Mr Tusk a letter to formally notify him of the decision, with a statement to be given to MPs later on Wednesday (March 29th). A response is expected from Mr Tusk within 48 hours.

The official spokesman for the Prime Minister said: “There will be a letter. We have always been clear we would trigger by the end of March and we have met that timetable.”

He went on to add, however, that there will be no early general election before 2020, which is when the next one is due under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see what happens over the next two years, especially for the construction industry. A recent report from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors suggested that the sector could see almost 200,000 EU workers lost after Brexit if the UK does lose access to the single market. This makes up eight per cent of the entire workforce in the industry.

The RICS cautioned that it is essential to ensure that access to the single market is continued if Brexit is going to be successful – or at least that there are alternative plans put forward to protect the construction and property sectors in the UK.
